Renting a boat in Øygarden
Øygarden is the island municipality west of Bergen, created in 2020 when Fjell, Sund and Øygarden merged. It counts about 1,500 islands, holms and skerries over 58.6 km from south to north, with Sotra as the largest island and the municipal centre at Straume on Litlesotra.
Only a small part of the choice is actually moored inside the municipality, at Straume and on Bildøyna, the island between Litlesotra and Sotra. The other owners keep their boats across the fjords: at Hetlevik and Florvåg on Askøy, near Godvik on the Bergen side, in the city itself and further south at Søreide, Hjellestad and Fana. You will find open boats, cabin cruisers, a flybridge motor yacht and several sailboats, some only rented out with the owner driving.
Sotra has two faces. Its east side has sheltered coves and woodland, while the west is bare and weather-beaten, partly shielded from the North Sea by Tofterøy, Algrøy, Lokøy and Turøy. On the south-west tip lies Glesvær, one of the oldest trading posts on the west coast, where up to 140 vessels once gathered during the herring fishery. Our Bergen by boat: 7 day trips includes the run out to Glesvær.
Plan for big ships. Hjeltefjorden, along the municipality's eastern side, is a main shipping lane into Bergen, and the whole coast from Sognesjøen down to Marstein is watched by the Fedje vessel traffic service.
