Renting a boat in Stavanger and on the city islands
The boats on this page belong to private owners around the Stavanger peninsula, not to a single marina. Several are moored in the city and on Hundvåg, the island borough across the harbour; others are in Sandnes, where an owner points to the Hinna and Jåttåvågen area; more are in Tananger, on Vassøy and on Rennesøy. The small end of the market is well covered, with open boats, bowriders and day cruisers, and a cabin cruiser and a sailing yacht are offered with the owner as skipper.
Two very different outings start here. To the north lie the islands of the Byfjord, and on Klosterøy stands Utstein Abbey, built in the late 1200s and Norway's best-preserved medieval monastery. To the south-east, Lysefjorden opens about 25 km from Stavanger at Forsand: 42 km long, with rock walls rising more than 1,000 m and Preikestolen dropping 604 m to the water. Times for both are in our five Stavanger boat routes.
In town, mind the speed signs: in the fairways of the harbour basin and around the Byøyene islands the limit for leisure boats is 8 knots. The main boating season is summer, roughly May to September.
