Vestre Åmøy, north of Stavanger
The Vestre on this page is Vestre Åmøy, the village on the western part of Åmøy, an island north of Stavanger that belonged to Rennesøy until 2020. A bridge to Sokn, built in 1992, connects it to the Byfjord Tunnel and the mainland. The island has close to 1,000 Bronze Age rock carvings, with signed fields on its eastern side.
For a boat, look to the neighbouring islands and the city: the owners are in Stavanger, on Hundvåg, Vassøy and Rennesøy, in Sandnes and in Tananger.
Åmøy sits where three stretches of water meet. Åmøyfjorden, between Åmøy and Hundvåg, opens west into Byfjorden and east into Horgefjorden, which is dotted with islets. Nearby, Klosterøy holds Utstein Kloster, Norway's only preserved medieval monastery. Further out, Fjøløy has a public jetty in Vinnarvika and a lighthouse from 1849. A Ryfylke islands route from Stavanger passes close by.
Stavanger's rules forbid jet-ski play across the municipality's waters, and set an 8-knot ceiling in the fairways around Vassøy and the city islands.
