Tromsø: sailing yachts and day boats at 69° north

Most boats listed for Tromsø are cruising sailing yachts. Several, of about 38 to 47 ft, lie near the city centre on Tromsøya, and a charter yacht based in Tromsø is rented by the week. Others are kept on Kvaløya, west of the city: a smaller sailing boat and a cabin cruiser with a heater for cold days. For shorter trips there is a small open boat in Tromsdalen across the sound and a 115 hp open boat on the mainland further north.

Kvaløya, 737 km², is the fifth-largest island in mainland Norway, cut into by Kaldfjorden, Ersfjorden and Kattfjorden, with Sommarøy off its south-west coast. South of it, Rystraumen, between Kvaløya and Ryøya, is only about 500 m wide, and its tidal stream can run at up to 8 knots, so time any passage for slack water. On the way from the city to Kvaløya you pass under the Sandnessund Bridge, which gives 41 m of clearance above the highest tide and 120 m between the fenders; do not pass another vessel in the opening. Back in town, the guest marina in the centre has shore power and water and is paid in the GoMarina app within 30 minutes of arrival.
