Tromsdalen, beneath the Tromsø Bridge
Tromsdalen is the mainland district across the sound from Tromsø city centre, named after the valley that runs down from Tromsdalstinden (1,238 m) to the Tromsøysund. From the water its landmark is the Arctic Cathedral, the triangular church consecrated in 1965. Listed in Tromsdalen is a small open boat with a 25 hp outboard for up to four people, suited to a few hours in the sound. The rest are across the water in Tromsø and on Kvaløya, several of them cruising sailing yachts.
Between the centre and Storsteinnes in Tromsdalen the sound narrows to about 600 m, and the Tromsø Bridge, opened in 1960, crosses it here. Its navigable opening gives 36.5 m of clearance above the highest tide and is 60 m wide between the fenders, and vessels may not pass each other in the opening.
