Arendal: from Pollen out through Galtesund
Arendal's centre is built on seven former islets, and its harbour basin, Pollen, opens to the south between Tyholmen and Langbryggen. Tyholmen, the old quarter of wooden merchants' houses that survived the town fires of the 1800s, faces straight onto it. Most boats on this page belong to owners in and around the town, with others at Eydehavn, Nedenes, Fevik and Grimstad. There are bowriders, fishing boats and small open boats, plus a cabin cruiser that sleeps a family.
The main way out to sea is Galtesund, the sound of just over 2 km between Hisøy and Tromøy, marked at its mouth by the Store Torungen and Sandvigodden lighthouses. Near its outer end lies Merdø, an old outport already named on Dutch sea charts in 1580. Its preserved skipper's house is now a museum, and most of the island belongs to Raet National Park, with sandy beaches for swimming.
