Fredrikstad lies where the Glomma meets the Skagerrak. Its Old Town on the east bank is called Northern Europe's best-preserved fortified town, and it looks its best from the river. Inside the city the river is a slow zone. Leisure boats may do no more than 5 knots in the Vesterelva fairway through the centre and 8 knots in Kjøkøysundet. The boating season runs roughly from May to September.
