Gamle Fredrikstad: the Old Town by boat

Gamle Fredrikstad, the Old Town, was founded in 1567 on the east bank of the Glomma, where the river divides into two channels. Its low earth ramparts and broad moats date from the 1660s, and it is also regarded as Norway's first Renaissance town. No rental boat is moored inside the Old Town.

The boats shown belong to owners around the city: on Kråkerøy and at Gressvik across the river, in Fredrikstad and Sarpsborg, at Skjeberg to the east, and out on the Hvaler islands of Vesterøy and Spjærøy. Most are open boats and cabin cruisers.

The simplest way to arrive by water is to tie up at the municipal guest berths for small boats in the city centre, paid for a whole day and night, the daytime or just the evening, and take the free city ferry over. The ferries shuttle between Gamlebyen, Smertu, the centre, Værste and Gressvik, so keep an eye out for them on the river. Downstream trips to Skjærhalden are in our Hvaler by boat guide.
