Høysand on Skjebergkilen

Høysand is a village in Sarpsborg, just over 2 km south-west of Skjeberg, on Skjebergkilen. This fjord arm, just under 5 km long, is known as the Sarpsborg riviera and holds many of the town's holiday cabins and boat berths. The public quay at Høysand, 60 m long and 6 m deep, is run by the regional port authority, Borg Havn. A cabin cruiser is kept at Høysand. Others are in Skjeberg, at Skjebergkilen, on Vesterøy, at Sand Marina on Spjærøy, and around Fredrikstad on Kråkerøy and Rolvsøy.

Kjerringholmen, the only islet in the kilen, is a public day-trip island with small beaches and toilets, reachable only by boat. At Høysand itself, Sandvika is a large bathing area with a kiosk and a diving tower. From just outside the kilen it is roughly 30 minutes at 20 knots to Skjærhalden on Hvaler, and less than an hour to Koster and Strömstad in Sweden. Check the calendar before exploring the kilen by boat: in its nature reserve, spring (1 April–31 May) and early autumn (15 August–30 September) mean no traffic on the water at all.
