Halden and the border fjord

Halden sits where the fjord along the Norwegian–Swedish border changes name: seaward of the town it is the Ringdalsfjorden, inland the Iddefjorden, while in Swedish it is Idefjorden all the way. None of the listed boats lies in Halden. The nearest are in neighbouring Sarpsborg, at Skjeberg, Høysand and on Skjebergkilen, and a small open boat is on the Swedish side at Hällestrand in Strömstad municipality. Among them are a family cabin cruiser with two cabins, small open boats and a jet ski.

Leaving town towards the sea you pass under the two Svinesund bridges; the newer arch, which carries the E6, has 55 m of clearance. Brattøya, one of the two larger islands in the fjord, is a nature reserve.

Go slowly near town. In the main fairway under Svinesund the state limit for leisure craft is 8 knots, and the municipality sets 5 knots inside a 150 m belt along the shore in named areas such as the inner harbour, Sauøyasundet and Røsneskilen.
