Mandal: the river, Sjøsanden and Skjernøy
Mandal, Norway's southernmost town, is split in two by the Mandalselva, a salmon river. A small open boat is let in town. The rest are close by: a cabin cruiser at Tregde Marina, listed under Skjernøya and about ten minutes from the centre, a dinghy at Svenevig, and elsewhere in Lindesnes another dinghy and a fast sports boat that only goes out with its owner at the helm.
Sjøsanden, 800 m of very fine sand, runs from the river mouth to Hobdeheia, backed by pine woods planted in the 1890s to stop the sand blowing into town. To the south lies Skjernøy, Norway's southernmost inhabited island, bridged to the mainland in 1964, with Ryvingen lighthouse on an islet offshore.
From 1 May to 31 August leisure boats must keep to 5 knots where the main and secondary fairways pass within 50 m of land, islets or visible skerries.
