Lindesnes is the municipality at the southern tip of mainland Norway, with Mandal as its centre since the 2020 merger. The boats are spread along the coast: an open utility boat in Mandal, a small dinghy at Svennevik and a fast sportsboat in Lindesnes, rented only with its owner as skipper.
The Lindesnes peninsula divides the North Sea from the Skagerrak, and Lindesnes lighthouse on its tip is the oldest in Norway, first lit in 1656. The stretch between Lindesnes and Lista has long been feared for strong winds and currents. Small boats can avoid the open sea through the Spangereid canal, opened in 2007 across the isthmus at Spangereid, although its 4.5 m clearance shuts out most sailing boats. West of Mandal the skerries include Imsøyene, Våre, Svinør and Underøy, and Skjernøya off Mandal is Norway's southernmost inhabited island.
