The Oslofjord is one of Norway’s most accessible waterways for boating, with over 40 islands within a short boat ride from the city centre. Whether you want swimming at Langøyene, fishing near Oscarsborg, or a sunset cruise past Nesodden – a rented boat gives you the freedom to experience it all.
Where Oslo's rental boats are moored
Boats listed in Oslo are spread along the city waterfront rather than gathered in one marina. Owners name Aker Brygge in the centre, Bygdøy, Skøyen by Bestumkilen and a berth on Hovedøya; others agree the exact spot after booking. Day cruisers, RIBs and small sailing boats make up most of the choice, along with a few larger motor yachts.
The inner harbour islands are minutes away. Hovedøya, much of it protected as a cultural heritage site, lies less than 500 m off Vippetangen. Gressholmen is joined to Rambergøya and Heggholmen, where the oldest lighthouse in the inner Oslofjord stands, while Lindøya and Nakholmen are covered in summer cabins from the 1920s. The speed rules are strict in the harbour. The city caps speed at 5 knots within 200 m of any land, islet or visible skerry, and the same limit covers whole stretches of water: - between Vippetangen, Sørenga, Grønlia, Kongshavn and Hovedøya - between Filipstad and Bygdøy - between Nakholmen and Galteskjær - among Hovedøya, Bleikøya, Lindøya and Gressholmen
Elsewhere the limit is 25 knots. Island ferries leave from Rådhusbrygge 4, so expect traffic off the City Hall.
