Best Swimming Spots in the Oslofjord (By Boat)

# Best Swimming Spots in the Oslofjord (By Boat)

One of the great advantages of having access to a boat in the Oslofjord is reaching swimming spots that are impossible – or difficult – to get to any other way. These bays and beaches are often quieter and more scenic than the city's public beaches. Here are our favorites.

Inner Oslofjord

1. Langøyene – The Sandy Beach

Langøyene has Oslo's only natural sandy beach, and it's surprisingly lovely. By boat, you can anchor in the bay on the west side and swim ashore, or tie up at the basic docks. The bottom is sand – ideal for children.

Anchoring depth: 2–5 meters. Sandy bottom.

2. Hovedøya – South Side

The south side of Hovedøya features flat rocks and a small beach that's popular throughout summer. Anchoring is possible, but keep your distance from swimmers. The rocks are great for sunbathing, and the water quality is surprisingly good.

3. Huk (Bygdøy)

Huk is perhaps Oslo's best-known beach, and it's equally beautiful from the water. You can anchor offshore and swim in. Note that boat traffic can be heavy on warm days.

4. Paradisbukta (Bygdøy)

Just around the corner from Huk. Slightly more sheltered and quieter. Shallow conditions make it perfect for families with small children.

Mid-Oslofjord

5. Sandspollen (Hurum)

One of the Oslofjord's finest swimming bays. Gradually deepening sandy bottom makes it ideal for both anchoring and swimming. Many boaters head here, and weekends can get busy – but there's usually enough space for everyone.

Tip: Anchor early on weekends. The bay is sheltered and also works well for overnight stays.

6. Steilene

Steilene is a group of islands south of Nesodden with crystal-clear water and wonderful rock formations. Parts of the area are nature reserves, but swimming and anchoring are allowed in many bays. Check maps for protected zones.

7. Håøya

Håøya is the Oslofjord's largest uninhabited island, and you'll find quiet bays with comfortable swimming temperatures in summer. The west side offers fine anchoring with a mud bottom.

Outer Oslofjord

8. Stauper (Nøtterøy)

A cluster of islets and rock outcrops outside Nøtterøy with fantastic swimming. Crystal-clear water and good anchoring conditions. Perfect for a snorkeling day.

9. Bolærne

Bolærne is an island group in the outer Oslofjord with military history and untouched nature. Swim from the rocks, then go ashore to explore the old fortifications.

Practical Tips for Swimming from a Boat

  • Use a swim platform – makes it much easier to get back into the boat.
  • Have a swim ladder – especially important for children and elderly passengers.
  • Check water temperature – the Oslofjord ranges from 15–22°C (59–72°F) through summer.
  • Keep your distance – anchor with good margin from other boats and swimmers.
  • Take your trash – leave nature as beautiful as you found it.

Rent a bowrider in Oslo for the ultimate swimming day, or bring along a kayak to explore shallower waters. See also our article on 10 boat trips from Oslo and anchoring in the Oslofjord.
