Where to Find Public Docks & Landing Points in the Oslofjord
# Where to Find Public Docks & Landing Points in the Oslofjord
The Oslofjord offers a wealth of public docks and places where you can go ashore by boat or kayak. Norway's "allemannsretten" (right to roam) also gives you certain rights regarding access to the coastal zone. Here's what you need to know.
Allemannsretten and the Coastal Zone
Allemannsretten is a legally enshrined Norwegian right that grants everyone free passage through uncultivated land. For boaters, this means:
- You may go ashore on uncultivated land – regardless of who owns the property, as long as you behave considerately.
- You may moor temporarily in uncultivated areas – but not in a way that prevents the landowner's use.
- Cultivated land is excluded – this includes farmland, private gardens, and areas immediately adjacent to houses.
- The 100-meter coastal zone – there is a construction ban in the shoreline zone, but your right of passage as a boater still applies.
Important Limitations
- You cannot camp closer than 150 meters to an inhabited cabin or house without permission.
- Open fires in or near forests are prohibited between April 15 and September 15.
- Show respect – enclosed gardens, private dock facilities, and marked areas should be left alone.
Public Docks in the Oslo Area
Central Oslo
- Rådhusbrygga (City Hall Pier) – Brief stops possible, primarily for scheduled ferries.
- Sørenga – Publicly accessible dock by the seawater pool. Limited space.
- Aker Brygge (public quay) – Brief stops for going ashore are allowed, but not overnight.
Inner Fjord Islands
- Hovedøya – Public dock on the north side. Free access.
- Gressholmen – Dock on the west side. Open to everyone.
- Langøyene – Docks on both sides. Popular on summer days.
- Nakholmen – Small dock. Be aware that large parts of the island have private cottages.
Inner and Mid-Oslofjord
- Nesodden – Several public docks along the coast, including at Nesoddtangen.
- Drøbak – Public dock by the beach and in the center.
- Steilene – Landing allowed, but be mindful of nature reserve regulations.
Tips for Kayak and Small Boats
With a kayak, you have even more landing options since you can reach places that are too shallow for motorboats. Kayaking makes it easy to explore:
- Small islets and skerries
- Shallow bays and reeds
- Beaches that are hard to reach from land
Practical Tips
- Use Kartverket's maps – search for public docks and recreation areas.
- Have fenders ready – public docks may have rough edges.
- Be prepared for crowds – especially on fine summer days.
- Clean up after yourself – carry your trash out.
- Be considerate – don't block docks for others.
