Farsund and the inner waterway behind Lista

Farsund town stands on a narrow but navigable sound where the Lyngdalsfjorden runs out to sea, between the Rosfjorden in the east and the Fedafjorden in the west. A sturdy open fishing boat with five rod holders is kept on the north side of town, by the Sellegrodsfjorden.

From there, the Sellegrodsfjorden, Helvikfjorden and Framvaren form a waterway northwards. At the head of Framvaren only the isthmus of Listeid separates it from the Eidsfjorden, and small boats can be carried across. It is a way of avoiding the weather-exposed outer side of the Lista peninsula that probably goes back a long time.

East of town, the Spindfjorden has a wide belt of skerries outside it, with Langøy among its islands. Lista itself has about 10 km of sandy beaches, and its wetlands, important for migrating birds, have been a Ramsar site since 1996.
