Flekkerøy, Kristiansand's largest island
Flekkerøy is a 6.22 km² island off Vågsbygd in the far south-west of Kristiansand, and no island in the city is larger. Since 1989 a 2,321 m road tunnel under Vestergapet has linked it to the mainland, replacing the ferry from Møvig. In the 1500s its harbour was one of the key ports on this coast, where merchant ships gathered to sail in convoy, and Dutch charts marked it as Vlecker. In summer, cabin owners multiply the island's population.
An owner rents out an open boat on the island itself. The other boats are on the mainland: most around Kristiansand, for example at Auglandsbukta, plus others in Søgne, Høvåg and Lillesand.
