Skjærhalden: Hvaler's harbour facing Sweden

Skjærhalden, on Kirkøy, is Hvaler's administrative centre, a village of under a thousand people that fills up in summer. None of the listed boats lies in the village itself. The nearest are elsewhere in Hvaler, on Vesterøy and Spjærøy, a cabin cruiser and a youth boat are on the mainland in Sarpsborg and Skjeberg, and others are across the border: an open boat at Hällestrand on Dynekilen, 5 km north of Strömstad, and a large RIB in Strömstad.

As a destination, Skjærhalden has a guest harbour for 100 to 130 boats and four restaurants around its square. Route boats leave here for Søndre and Nordre Sandøy, Herføl and Lauer, and at weekends, Christmas, Easter and all summer a ferry sails to Strömstad, so keep a lookout in the harbour. For the Swedish side, including the crossing between the Koster islands and Skjærhalden, see our Fjällbacka, Strömstad and Kosterhavet guide, and agree with the owner before taking a boat over the border.

Skjærhalden looks out on Ytre Hvaler National Park, where all fishing is banned all year.
