Vesterøy, the first of the Hvaler islands
Vesterøy is Hvaler's second-largest island and the first one you reach on the road from Fredrikstad, joined by bridges to Spjærøy in the east and Papper in the west. A few boats are kept on the island itself, including a small dinghy and a cruising sailing yacht. A big flybridge motor yacht lies at Sand Marina on Spjærøy, on the far side of Asmalsundet. Others come from Kråkerøy, Gressvik and Fredrikstad, from Skjeberg and Sarpsborg, and from Hällestrand on the Swedish side.
On the south of the island, Utgårdskilen is the largest fishing harbour east of Lindesnes, with a guest jetty behind its breakwater that is open all year. Most of Vesterøy's south side is recreation land, with beaches at Kuvauen and Guttormsvauen. Off the south coast lies Akerøya, part of Ytre Hvaler National Park, with a 17th-century fort on Festningsholmen. Our trips to Akerøya and Tisler start from the Glomma.
Between 1 June and 31 August, keep to 5 knots in Skjelsbusundet and Utgårdskilen. The Skjelsbusund bridge to Spjærøy has 17 m of clearance. From 15 April to 15 July, the national park asks boats to stay 50 m from seabird nesting sites and seal haul-outs.
