Brattestø: a harbour behind the breakwater on Asmaløy

Brattestø lies on Asmaløy, one of the middle islands of Hvaler, between Spjærøy to the west and Kirkøy to the east. No boats on this page are moored here. The closest are on Vesterøy and Spjærøy, among them small open boats, a sailing yacht and a large motor yacht at Sand Marina; others are in Fredrikstad, Sarpsborg and Skjeberg, and across the border in Strömstad and Hällestrand.

The harbour itself is a small guest harbour tucked behind a large breakwater. You enter through a gap in the breakwater into 3 to 6 m of water, and there are sandy beaches just outside. Windsurfing is banned inside the breakwater. A coastal path follows the shore to Vikerhavn, one of Hvaler's working fishing harbours.

Some 1.5 km west of the harbour is Akerøya, a 1.5 km² island owned by the state and the regional outdoor recreation council. More than 400 plant species grow there; the middle of the island is open to the public, while parts are closed in the nesting season. Our Hvaler guide covers the trip out.
