Renting a boat on Spjærøy: an open boat in the middle of Hvaler
Spjærøy is a long, wooded island of 8 km² in Hvaler, linked by bridges to Vesterøy on one side and Asmaløy on the other.
A 21 ft open boat with a 150 hp engine is kept at Rød on the island, with a large sunbed and plenty of seating for swimming trips and water sports. The owner rents only to people over 30, asks for ID, requires a boating licence if you were born in 1980 or later, and expects you to bring your own life jackets.
Asmalsund, the sound between Spjærøy and Asmaløy, is a 5-knot zone from 1 June to 31 August. Further out, the 5-knot zones inside Ytre Hvaler National Park are not signposted, and parts of Akerøya and Tangen on Tisler are closed from 15 April to 15 July. Routes and times are in our guide to Hvaler by boat.
