What is Ship O’Hoi?

Herføl, Hvaler's island on the Swedish border

Herføl is the southernmost inhabited island in Hvaler, right by the border with Sweden, with about 20 year-round residents. No rental boats are listed on the island itself. The closest lie on the neighbouring islands of Vesterøy and Spjærøy and at Sand Marina, and across the border, owners at Hällestrand and Strömstad take their boats out with a skipper.

Herføl is a place to visit by boat. A regular boat runs from Skjærhalden, and Herføl Marina has a guest harbour where you can buy petrol, next to a pub, a place to eat and a shop. On Linnekleppen, the highest point at 31 m, stands a seamark tower from 1878. Our Hvaler guide covers the other islands.

Herfølrenna, the sound between Herføl and Søndre Sandøy, is a 5-knot zone all year. South of the island, Ytre Hvaler National Park borders Sweden's Kosterhavet, and Ytre Hvaler is one of the Oslofjord's zero-fishing areas, so leave the rods at home.
