Hvaler: renting a boat among 833 islands

Several of these boats already lie out in the archipelago. Owners on Vesterøy and Spjærøy, the first islands the Fastlandsveien road reaches from Kråkerøy, offer small open boats, a sailing yacht and, at Sand Marina, a large motor yacht, and a little open boat is listed under Hvaler itself. The rest are a short run up the Glomma, in Fredrikstad, on Kråkerøy and in Gressvik, with some at Skjeberg on the Sarpsborg side.

Hvaler counts 833 islands, islets and skerries. Its centre, Skjærhalden on Kirkøy, has only been reachable by road since the tunnel under Løperen opened in 1989, and ferries still run from there to Nordre and Søndre Sandøy, Herføl and Lauer. Beyond them lies Ytre Hvaler National Park, 354 km² of which 340 km² are sea. There are five Hvaler routes with times in our guide.

Inside the park, other rules apply: - Jet skis are banned in the whole national park, all year. - Twelve 5-knot zones in the park are not signposted; the municipality recommends the BåtFart app. - From 15 April to 15 July, stay 50 m away from seabird and seal sites. - Ytre Hvaler is a zero-fishing area, so no fishing gear is needed.

Late on weekday afternoons, give way at Utgårdskilen and Skjærhalden: fishing boats land their catch there, mostly Monday to Thursday between 16:00 and 20:00.
