Strömstad, the Koster islands and the border

Strömstad is Sweden's westernmost town, about 20 km from the Norwegian border. A large RIB for up to twelve is based here and goes out with its owner as skipper. A small open boat, also with its owner, is at Hällestrand, 5 km north on the Dynekilen inlet, where Tordenskjold destroyed a Swedish transport fleet in 1716. The rest are over the border on Hvaler, among them a motor yacht at Sand Marina.

The Koster islands lie about 10 km south-west, across the 247 m deep Kosterfjorden. Around them is Kosterhavet, Sweden's first marine national park, opened in 2009 on the same day as Ytre Hvaler in Norway. Our Kosterhavet guide covers both sides.

Park rules for boats: - Nowhere in the park may you go faster than 25 knots; close to Nordkoster and Sydkoster the summer limit, mid-May to the end of August, is 5 knots. - In those same months, do not anchor or pull up a boat within 50 m of a sandy beach. - Water scooters may not enter the 5-knot area.
