What is Ship O’Hoi?
Nedenes, on the Nidelva west of Arendal
Nedenes lies on the west side of Arendal, bounded to the north and east by the Nidelva. It belonged to Øyestad until 1992 and is today a mix of farmland and housing. An owner here rents out a day cruiser that also sleeps aboard. The other boats are in Arendal, among them a boat about a 15-minute walk from Pollen, and to the west at Fevik and in Grimstad, including bowriders, fishing boats, a family cabin cruiser and a classic sailing yacht.
The river reaches the sea by three outlets: one towards Arendal town, one between Hisøy and Gjervoldsøy, and one west of Gjervoldsøy. From there it is a short run to the islands that belong to Hisøy, Havsøya and Torungene among them, and through Galtesund, between Hisøy and Tromøy, you reach the other entrance to the town. For a night in town, our guide to southern Norway's guest harbours describes the guest harbour in Pollen.
Go gently on the river. Arendal's rules set 5 knots all year along the Nidelva's course, as far up as it can be navigated from the sea.
