Færvik, the old centre of Tromøy
Færvik was the administrative centre of Tromøy municipality until 1992, when Tromøy, the largest island on the Sørlandet coast, became part of Arendal. Its long church dates from 1884. No boats on this page are moored in Færvik. The nearest are across the Tromøy bridge in Arendal, and others are at Eydehavn, Nedenes, Fevik and Grimstad.
Tromøy's outer, Skagerrak side belongs to Raet National Park: 607 km², of which 599 km² are sea, named after the great ice-age moraine that comes ashore on the island as boulder beaches. At Hove in the south-west, the shallow, sheltered Hovekilen lies behind the headland, and at Spornes the beach switches between sand and bare stones with the wind and weather. Off the east side, the moraine only just breaks the surface at Målen, a 130 m boulder islet in waters known as a ships' graveyard, so give it a wide berth.
In the park's zone A seabird areas, all traffic closer than 50 m to land is banned from 15 April to 15 July.
