Renting a boat in Karlsøy: Mikkelvik on northern Ringvassøya
Karlsøy municipality, north of Tromsø, is made up entirely of islands: some 600 islands, holms and skerries between Ullsfjorden and the Norwegian Sea. People live on five of them, Ringvassøya, Vannøya, Reinøya, Rebbenesøya and Karlsøya, the small island that gave the municipality its name.
A steady 20 ft open fishing boat for up to seven, with a 75 hp engine, is kept at Mikkelvik on the north side of Ringvassøya, where the road across the island from Hessfjord ends.
Mikkelvik is also the ferry landing for Rebbenesøya, so keep clear of the ferry when you leave. The sea around the islands is productive, and fishing has been the main livelihood here for centuries. Several nature reserves cover outer islets, among them Sørfugløya with its holms and skerries off Rebbenesøya, so check the rules before going ashore.
