Tomasjord, on the mainland side of the Tromsøysund
Tomasjord is a mainly residential district of Tromsø on the east side of the Tromsøysund, just north of Tromsdalen, with new blocks of flats at Tomasjordnes. Its best-known feature is under your keel: the Tromsøysund road tunnel surfaces here after running beneath the sound from Breivika on the island. No boats are listed in Tomasjord. The closest is a small open boat in Tromsdalen, just to the south; the rest are sailing yachts and motorboats in Tromsø, on Kvaløya and on the mainland further north.
Heading north, the sound widens to about 3 km before it meets Grøtsundet, a strait some 33 km long that runs from the northern tip of Tromsøya to Ullsfjorden, with Kvaløya, Ringvassøya and Reinøya on its north-western side. Grøtsundet is one of the four seaward approaches to the port of Tromsø, so expect larger vessels and cross the fairway quickly. Our Tromsø summer boating guide suggests short trips in the sound and longer ones out to Kvaløya.
