Kvaløya, Tromsø's mountain island

Kvaløya, Sállir in Northern Sami, is the mountainous island west of Tromsøya, with at least ten peaks above 700 m and Store Blåmann, at 1,044 m, the highest. About 13,000 people live on it, most of them around Kvaløysletta on the east side, which is in effect a suburb of Tromsø. A small cabin cruiser is listed on the island. The other boats are in Tromsø and Tromsdalen: mostly cruising sailing yachts, including a crewed yacht rented by the week, and a small open boat.

By road the island is tied to the city by the Sandnessund Bridge, to Ringvassøya in the north by the undersea Kvalsund Tunnel and to Sommarøy in the west by a bridge, and by boat all three directions are open. Sommarøy is a fishing village of about 300 people on Store Sommarøya and Hillesøya, whose name points to seasonal summer use of the islands long ago. On the south side, Straumhella is a popular outdoor spot about 30 km from the city. For more outings, see our Tromsø summer boating guide.

Light is on your side this far north. The midnight sun lasts from about 18 May to 26 July, and there is no true darkness between late March and mid-September, which makes late-evening trips easy in summer.
