Tau: across the fjord from Stavanger
Tau is a village in Strand on Horgefjorden, a branch of the Boknafjord, about 20 km across the water from Stavanger. It was once Ryfylke's milling centre, and fast passenger boats still call here, although the Ryfast tunnel has linked it to Stavanger by road since 2019. Tau has a large small-boat harbour, and its guest harbour is run by Tau Båtforening.
Pickup is on the Stavanger side: in the city, on Hundvåg and Vassøy, in Sandnes and on Rennesøy, and further north in Hjelmeland. Crossing to Tau is a trip past the islands. On the way lie Lindøy, with facilities for bathing and staying ashore at Sørvika, and Brimse, a car-free island with a guest jetty and a walk round it of about two hours. Preikestolen, also in Strand, is the goal of the first of our Stavanger boat trips of three to six hours.
A note for deeper boats: Tau's guest harbour is in the northern harbour, just inside Sagholmen, with a maximum depth of 1.5 m. Bigger boats are asked to use the southern harbour.
