What is Ship O’Hoi?
Knarrevik, by the Sotra bridge
Coming from Bergen on road 555, Knarrevik is the first place you reach after crossing the Sotra bridge. It lies on the east side of Litlesotra in Øygarden and has grown together with Straume into one urban area. The name comes from the knarr, the Viking cargo ship.
Knarrevik has no rental harbour of its own. The nearest boats are two to three kilometres away: on the Bergen side of the sound near Godvik, on Bildøyna and at Straume. The rest of the listings come from owners on Askøy, at Søreide and around Bergen. Cabin cruisers and sailboats dominate, while a RIB and open boats serve shorter outings.
The old suspension bridge, opened in 1971 and 1,236 m long, leaves 50 m of clearance, enough for any sailing yacht. North of it the sound becomes the southern end of Hjeltefjorden, a 46 km fjord that carries much of the ship traffic to and from Bergen, so cross it at a right angle and keep clear of large vessels.
Askøy lies just across the sound, with Herdla at its northern tip. Heading east, Byfjorden brings you to the city, where Vågen, the harbour at Bryggen, has a 5-knot limit. For distances and stops, read Bergen outings by boat.
