Mathopen and the Haakonsvern naval base
On the north shore of Grimstadfjorden, some 8 km from the centre of Bergen, lies the Laksevåg suburb of Mathopen. Its name comes from Old Norse words for food or fish and for a small bay. Much of the waterfront belongs to Haakonsvern, the main base of the Royal Norwegian Navy, opened in 1963.
Nothing is available for rent in Mathopen itself. The nearest boat is a cabin cruiser a short way north towards Godvik; others are on Litlesotra and Bildøyna across Raunefjorden, at Søreide, in the city, and in Fana and at Hjellestad further south. The range runs from open boats and RIBs to cabin cruisers and sailboats.
The naval base shapes how you move here. The water around Haakonsvern and the military area at Knappen is a prohibited zone. Only leisure boats with a fixed berth inside it may pass through, by the shortest route, at least 100 m from the quays, and they must stop if called. Everyone else stays outside. In addition, Mathopsvågen and Hetlevikstraumen, where Grimstadfjorden narrows to the north, have a 5-knot limit.
Out in Raunefjorden, the route south leads towards Lysøen and Korsfjorden, and north to Byfjorden and the city. The day-trip guide for Bergen gives rough distances.
