7 Perfect Day Trips by Boat from Bergen
# 7 Perfect Day Trips by Boat from Bergen
Bergen is the gateway to the fjords, and from its quays you have an entire world of islands, fjords and coastal communities within reach for a day trip. Whether you want to explore cultural history, find quiet anchorages or chase the best swimming spots, we have a route for you. Here are seven day trips we recommend.
1. Lysoen – Ole Bull's Paradise (2–3 hours)
Distance: Approx. 12 nautical miles return from Bergen city centre.
Lysoen was the summer residence of violinist Ole Bull, and the island is now a museum. The Moorish-style villa is an architectural curiosity, and the marked walking paths around the island offer beautiful scenery.
Moor at the jetty on Lysoen (limited space – arrive early) and spend an hour at the museum and an hour walking around the island. Consider combining the trip with a swim at one of the small coves on the south side.
2. Bekkjarvik – Fishing Village Gem on Austevoll (4–5 hours)
Distance: Approx. 25 nautical miles return.
Bekkjarvik is one of the west coast's best-preserved fishing villages, with timber wharves, boathouses and a guest harbour that welcomes visitors. Here you will also find Bekkjarvik Gjestgiveri, serving world-class seafood.
The journey takes you south through Leroyosen towards Austevoll. The waters are mostly sheltered, but check conditions in Korsfjorden if you choose the outer route.
3. Austevoll – the Island Kingdom in the South (5–6 hours)
Distance: Approx. 30 nautical miles return.
Austevoll municipality consists of hundreds of islands and islets. You can spend an entire day island hopping, fishing in the sound, swimming from the rocks and exploring small fishing communities.
Stolmen, the southernmost inhabited island, is worth the trip alone. From here you gaze out towards open sea, and on clear days you can glimpse Marsteinen lighthouse.
Tip: Use a daycruiser for this trip – you need range and comfort for a full day.
4. Osterfjorden – Fjord Idyll Close to the City (3–4 hours)
Distance: Approx. 20 nautical miles return.
Osterfjorden stretches northeast from Bergen and offers dramatic fjord scenery without the crowds. Here you will find steep mountainsides, waterfalls (especially in spring and early summer) and quiet coves.
Bruvik at the head of the fjord has an old stave church and a cosy jetty. Along the fjord there are several natural anchorages where you can enjoy the silence.
5. Alversund and Lindasstrommen (3–4 hours)
Distance: Approx. 18 nautical miles return.
Alversund north of Bergen is known for Lindasstrommen – a narrow sound with strong tidal currents that creates exciting waters. The area is popular for fishing (especially saithe), and the shoreline offers fine walking opportunities.
Important: Lindasstrommen has strong currents at high and low tide. Plan your passage at slack water and check the tide table in advance.
6. The Sotra Coast – Ocean and Horizon (4–5 hours)
Distance: Approx. 20 nautical miles return.
The western side of Sotra faces the North Sea and offers a completely different landscape from the sheltered fjords. Here you will find dramatic cliffs, ocean swimming pools and small fishing villages.
The Turoy area is popular for fishing and swimming, while Glesvaer fishing village offers charm and history. The seafood restaurant Cornelius on Holmen is a classic – book a table in advance.
Be aware: The coast is exposed. This route is best on days with calm seas and wind from the south or east.
7. Rosendal – Fjord Meets Mountain (6–7 hours)
Distance: Approx. 45 nautical miles return.
Rosendal in Kvinnherad is a longer trip, but the reward is great. Here you will find Barony Rosendal (Norway's only barony), Folgefonna National Park and an idyllic fjord village.
The journey takes you south through Bjornafjorden and into Hardangerfjorden. You pass dramatic mountain formations and can see the Folgefonna glacier in the distance. In Rosendal you can visit the Barony, stroll through the rose garden or simply enjoy lunch at one of the cafes.
Tip: This route is long – consider a sailboat for a more relaxed and environmentally friendly experience.
