Loddefjord at the head of Grimstadfjorden
Loddefjord is the suburb that grew up in the early 1970s around the Vestkanten shopping centre, about 9 km west of Bergen centre in Laksevåg borough. On the water, it sits at the far end of Grimstadfjorden, which reaches 5.5 km inland from its mouth east of Bjorøy, between Grimstad on the south side and Mathopen by Vatlestraumen on the north.
Most boats listed here belong to private owners elsewhere in Bergen, from the centre to Fana, Hjellestad, Straume and Søreide, with a few on Askøy and Bildøyna. Cabin cruisers, open boats and bowriders dominate, and some sailboats are available too.
Plan on a slow start: Mathopsvågen and the narrow northern part of Grimstadfjorden, known as Hetlevikstraumen, are 5-knot zones under Bergen's speed regulation.
Where the fjord meets the open channel you reach Vatlestraumen, part of the main approach to Bergen from the south, between Bjorøyna and the mainland at Hilleren and Håkonshella. Large vessels pass through here, the currents can be strong, and they do not always follow the direction of the sound. Nearby Alvøen, one of Norway's oldest and best-preserved industrial sites, is worth a look from the water. Our Bergen day trips by boat continue out to Sotra and the islands.
