Ågotnes on northern Sotra
Ågotnes is the local centre for northern Sotra, about 20 km west of Bergen in Øygarden, and one of the main supply bases for the offshore oil industry. For now the boats shown are elsewhere, the nearest on Bildøyna and at Straume; others are across the water on Askøy, at Florvåg and Hetlevik, and further away in Bergen, Søreide and Hjellestad.
Local boating is organised through clubs such as Ågotnes Båtforening and Areknappen Båtlag. To the north-west lies Turøy, reached by bridge since 1991, where Turøyvarden, a stone cairn built in 1896 at 74.5 m, still serves as a sea mark; the island draws birdwatchers, divers and sea kayakers. Sotra's exposed south-west coast gets its own chapter in our Bergen trip guide.
Øygarden has no general speed limit, only 5-knot zones. Near Ågotnes these include Fjæreidepollen at Areknappen, Solsviksundet–Misjesundet just to the north, and the waters at Turøyna. Ship traffic along this coast is monitored by Fedje VTS, so expect larger vessels and keep well clear of them.
