Øygarden's northern islands: Rong and beyond

This page centres on the outer, northern end of Øygarden, well away from Bergen's suburbs. Out here are a small fishing boat and, at Rong, a pilothouse boat that goes out only with its owner as skipper and fishing guide. The rest sit nearer the city, at Straume and Bildøyna, in two Askøy villages, at Frekhaug and in central Bergen. Fishing boats and small open boats lead, and there are also cabin cruisers, sailboats and a flybridge cruiser.

Rongøyna is linked by bridges to Bergen via Sotra. Its interior is coastal heath, moorland and bare rock, with the Ormhilleren recreation area on its south side. Further north, across the municipal border in Fedje, the red cast-iron tower of Hellisøy lighthouse has marked this coast since 1855. Around the islands, several narrow sounds are 5-knot zones under the leisure-craft rules for Øygarden, among them Ulvsundet near Rong, the channels by Turøyna, and Solsviksundet and Misjesundet on the way south.
