Renting a boat on Askøy
Askøy is an island municipality just north-west of Bergen, linked to the mainland at Olsvik by the Askøy Bridge, which was Scandinavia's longest suspension bridge when it was built. Three fjords surround it: Byfjorden to the south, Herdlefjorden to the east and north-east, and Hjeltefjorden to the west.
The listings here come from private owners, some on the island at Florvåg, Hetlevik and elsewhere on Askøy, others across the water in Bergen, Hordvik, Frekhaug and Øygarden. Day boats and cabin cruisers dominate; sailboats and trips with the owner at the helm are also on offer.
The municipality describes two sides of the island. The east is green with forest and meadow, while the west and north are windswept heath, and all around are sheltered coves with room for swimmers and visiting boats. Kollevåg and Solnes are two of the bays it recommends, and fishing from a boat is good in the fjords.
At the northern tip lies Herdla, a 1.6 km² island about 30 km from Kleppestø, known for its fort, the pebble beach of Vestrefjæra and a protected wetland that is the richest bird area in the old Hordaland county. The trip there is one of the outings in Bergen by boat: 7 day trips.
