Krk works both for a day on the water and as the start of a longer trip through the Kvarner islands.
Punat and Košljun
The sheltered bay of Punat is home to Marina Punat, one of the oldest marinas in Croatia. In the middle of the bay lies Košljun, a small wooded islet with a Franciscan monastery – an easy first trip in a small boat.
Baška and the south coast
On the south-east side of the island, Baška has a long pebble beach and a string of coves that are best reached from the water. Opposite lie Prvić and the Senj coast, exposed to the bora, so pick a calm day.
Day trips to Cres, Plavnik and Rab
West of Krk, the uninhabited island of Plavnik and the east coast of Cres have quiet anchorages. To the south, Rab and its sandy beaches are within reach of a faster boat or a day's sail.

Renting a boat on Krk: Punat or Krk town
Krk offers two kinds of rental. The sailing yachts and larger motor boats are mostly at Marina Punat, in the naturally sheltered bay of Punat on the south-west coast. Opened in 1964, it counts as the start of organised nautical tourism in Croatia, is open all year and works on VHF 17. The smaller speedboats, RIBs and cabin cruisers are listed in Krk town, rented by the day and suited to exploring the island's own coast; check the exact meeting point in each listing.
A few short trips from here: - Košljun, a wooded islet about 750 m from Punat, with a Franciscan monastery and a library of some 30,000 titles. It can only be reached by boat. - Baška, at the south end of Krk, with the 1.8 km Vela Plaža and several beaches you can only reach from the sea. - Plavnik, the uninhabited island between Krk and Cres, known for its griffon vultures, with Cres and Rab further out.
Near the coast the rules are precise. Within 150 m of the shore the limit is 5 knots and between 150 and 300 m it is 8 knots, so boats may plane only further out. Keep 50 m from marked swimming areas, and boats with engines up to 5 kW must stay within 500 m of land. On the island's central and northern side the bura is the wind to watch.
