Pula, at the southern tip of Istria, is the nearest Croatian charter base for sailors driving from Slovenia, Austria, Germany and northern Italy. Charter boats are spread over several marinas in and around the city, among them Marina Veruda, Marina Polesana, ACI Marina Pula and Fažana. From here you can sail up the Istrian coast to Rovinj, round Cape Kamenjak, or cross the Kvarner Gulf to Cres and Lošinj – bareboat or with a skipper.

Sailing from Pula: Istria and the Kvarner islands
Pula gives you two very different sailing areas: the green, gently indented Istrian coast to the north, and the islands of the Kvarner Gulf to the east.
The Istrian coast
North of Pula the coast runs past Fažana and the Brijuni islands to Rovinj, whose old town rises straight out of the sea, and on to Poreč. Harbours are close together, which suits relaxed day sails.
Cape Kamenjak and Medulin
At the southern tip of Istria, the protected Cape Kamenjak has rocky coves with very clear water, and the wide bay of Medulin offers sheltered anchoring nearby.
Across the Kvarner Gulf
To the east lie Unije, Susak, Lošinj and Cres. The crossing is open water and the bora can blow hard here, sometimes with little warning, so plan it for a settled day and check the forecast every morning.

Pula's marinas and the Brijuni rules
Pula has more than one charter base, and they are on different sides of town. The largest group of boats is at Tehnomont Marina Veruda, in Veruda bay south of the centre, open all year, with 630 berths and shelter from all winds. Marina Polesana lies on the north side of Pula Bay, facing the Brijuni islands, and ACI Marina Pula is on the city waterfront a few metres from the Roman Arena. A few boats start from Fažana. Sailing yachts are the core of the fleet, with catamarans and some motor boats.
Two protected areas shape any day out: - Brijuni National Park, north-west of Pula. Private boats may enter park waters only to moor in the port of Veli Brijun or at the authorised anchorage in front of it. You may not stop between Jerolim and Veli Brijun, the park fee applies, and fishing is banned. - Cape Kamenjak, the southern tip of Istria. Do not anchor on the Neptune grass meadows. Currents are very strong between Cape Kršine and the islet of Fenoliga, and speedboats must stay at least 300 m from the shore.
