Isdalstø, the old ferry landing by Knarvik
Isdalstø lies on the shore about 1.5 km west of Knarvik, the centre of Alver, and is still Knarvik's postal name. It was once the traffic hub of Nordhordland: the car ferry to Steinestø started here in 1936 and gave Bergen its first continuous road link north. In 1956 the ferry quay moved to Knarvik to shorten the crossing, and the Nordhordland Bridge replaced the ferry in 1994.
No boats are listed at Isdalstø. The listings closest to it are in Alver, where a small pilothouse boat is let with a skipper, across Salhusfjorden at Hordvik, where a cabin cruiser is kept, and at Frekhaug and in Bergen, where the choice runs from sailing yachts to a bowrider. Heading west from Isdalstø, the built-up shore continues to Alversund and the tidal strait at Alverstraumen, one of the trips in our Bergen day-trip guide.
Sailing yachts have an easy route north-west: the Hagelsundbrua between Knarvik and Flatøy has 50 m of clearance.
