Alver and the sheltered inner route of Lurefjorden

Alver is the Nordhordland municipality created in 2020 from Lindås, Radøy and Meland. With 843 islands and islets it is as much sea as land, and it lies within Nordhordland's UNESCO biosphere reserve, the only one in Norway. Small boats are listed within Alver: a pilothouse boat that goes out with its owner as skipper, and an open 17 ft boat. The rest are a sailing yacht at Frekhaug, a cabin cruiser at Hordvik across the Nordhordland Bridge, boats in Bergen and a small fishing boat in Øygarden.

Alver's most distinctive water is Lurefjorden, 16 km long, between Radøy and the Lindås peninsula. With its inlets from Radfjorden and Fensfjorden it formed a sheltered inner fairway along the coast, used by small and medium-sized vessels, and its many arms were once a transport network of their own. Today the fjord and its shores are listed as a cultural landscape of national interest under the name Den indre farleia. The old inns stood at its two narrow entrances, Alverstraumen in the south and Kilstraumen in the north. Our Bergen day-trip guide covers the trip up from the city.

Those two entrances are where to take care: the tide sets up strong currents in both, so plan to pass at slack water.
