Frekhaug on Holsnøy, across the Salhusfjorden

Frekhaug is the largest village on Holsnøy, an 89 km² island in Alver about 30 km north of central Bergen, and until 2020 it was the centre of the old Meland municipality. It faces Salhusfjorden from the island's south-east side. An owner keeps a sailing yacht with two double cabins and a heated saloon at Frekhaug, and a small pilothouse boat is listed a short way along the shore in Alver. The other boats are across the fjord in Hordvik and elsewhere in northern Bergen, at Indre Arna, and on Askøy at Florvåg and Hetlevik.

From Frekhaug, Herdlefjorden runs north-west between Holsnøy and Askøy to Herdla, a 1.6 km² island at Askøy's northern tip whose nature reserve protects a bird area where 224 species have been recorded. In the other direction, past Knarvik, lies Alverstraumen, a sound only 100 to 200 m wide and a kilometre long between Radøy and the mainland. Both trips are in our Bergen day-trip guide.

Take Alverstraumen seriously. Its tidal currents are strong, so in a small boat wait for slack water rather than pushing through against the stream.
