Hjelmås on the Lindås shore of Osterfjorden
Hjelmås is a village in Alver on the Lindås side of Osterfjorden, with Leknes just to the south; both share the Hjelmås postcode. No boats are listed here yet. The nearest are a cabin cruiser at Hordvik, a pilothouse boat with its owner as skipper elsewhere in Alver, a sailing yacht at Frekhaug, and a bowrider and a sailing yacht in Bergen.
Across the water are the Osterøy villages of Hjelvik, Raknes and Hosanger. Heading north-east, the fjord passes Ostereidet, where an isthmus of about 1.5 km separates it from Hindenesfjorden, and then a row of fairly large islands, Padøyni the longest at almost 6 km. Until the early 1960s the fjord was fished every autumn for small herring and sprat. Our Bergen day-trip guide follows it all the way to Mostraumen.
Plan for the wind. A southerly blowing up Osterfjorden can be very strong, so a calm morning start is the safer choice.
