What is Ship O’Hoi?
Hernar, Øygarden's old outer harbour
Hernar is a small island at the far north of Øygarden, with only a handful of year-round residents and many summer visitors. For centuries it was an outer harbour on the sea route west: longships and later sailing ships waited here for fair weather before crossing to Orkney, Shetland, Iceland and Greenland. During the Second World War refugees left from Hernar for Shetland. Sea eagles nest on the surrounding islands, and there are seals and otters.
No boats are listed on Hernar itself. The closest are open fishing boats a short way south, one of them on Hellesøy, from where a local route boat serves Hernar, Lyngøy, Sanden, Sulo and Nordøy. Another open boat is further north in Austrheim.
These waters lie inside the area monitored by Fedje VTS, a traffic centre set up to organise tanker traffic to the Sture and Mongstad terminals, so keep a good lookout for large ships.
