Renting a boat in Austrheim, among the islands at Norway's western edge
Austrheim, in Nordhordland, is made up of islands facing the shipping lane and the North Sea, plus the north-western tip of the Lindås peninsula. Vardetangen, on that tip, is the westernmost point of mainland Norway. Fosnøyna is the main island, with the church and the municipal centre, and Fensfjorden forms the border with Gulen to the north.
A 19 ft open console boat for up to four with a 60 hp engine is kept at Langøyna in the west of the municipality. Its owner suggests it for fishing, swimming and island trips. Vardetangen is about 7 km east in a straight line.
The islands lie close together, and the sounds between them carry strong tidal currents; locally they are called straumer. Kilstraumen is one, and Fosnstraumen, the southern border with Radøy, another, so check the tide before taking a small boat through.
