Gulen, where the Sognefjord meets the sea
Gulen lies at the mouth of the Sognefjord, bounded by the Sognefjord to the north, the North Sea to the west and the Fensfjorden to the south. Besides the mainland it has some 1,500 islands, islets and skerries, the largest being Sandøyna, Hisarøyna, Byrknesøyna, Mjømna and Hille. Gulatinget, one of the key institutions of early Norwegian history, met here.
A 14 ft open boat for up to five is kept in a marina at Eivindvik, the municipal centre. Its four-stroke outboard has electric start and, according to the owner, uses only about 0.2 litres of petrol per nautical mile. The boat planes with two aboard and suits fishing and exploring the skerries. It is handed over with a full tank and must come back full, and remember to open the self-bailing valve when you return it.
