Renting a boat in Askvoll: out to Atløy, Værlandet and Bulandet

Askvoll is the westernmost municipality in Sunnfjord, facing the North Sea. In Askvoll village itself you can rent an open 17-footer with a 90 hp outboard and seats for six, meant for fishing and outings with the family.

West of the village lies Atløy, a 38 km² island north of the mouth of Dalsfjorden, whose timber church at Vilnes dates from 1674. Further out, Værlandet sits at the mouth of Vilnesfjorden and is linked by the Nordsjøporten bridges, opened in 2003, to Bulandet, a group of about 300 islands, holms and skerries, around 15 of them inhabited. Since fishing on Utvær ended, Bulandet has been Norway's westernmost living fishing village.

Closer to home, Stongfjorden runs 9 km north-east from Stavenesodden, and Staveneset has 30 burial cairns and 11 rock carvings. The car ferry to Værlandet also uses these waters, so keep a lookout for it.
