Renting a boat in Bygstad, at the head of Dalsfjorden
Bygstad lies at the inner end of Dalsfjorden in Sunnfjord, where the river Gaula runs out into the fjord. Norway's oldest salmon ladder is at Osen in the village.
An 18 ft open console boat for up to six, with a 115 hp outboard, is listed in the village, placed by the sound of Svædsundet.
Measured from Vilnes on Atløy, Dalsfjorden is 40 km long including its outer part, Vilnesfjorden. The inner fjord is narrow, only 0.5 to 1 km across, and it opens out at Straumsnes into Vilnesfjorden, which is 3.5 km wide. On the way out you pass Dale, the administrative centre of Fjaler on the south shore, and the Dalsfjord bridge, which carries county road 609 over the fjord on the way out towards Atløy.
