Fjaler on the south shore of the Dalsfjorden

Fjaler lies along the south side of the Dalsfjorden in Sunnfjord, with its centre at Dale. Together with the Vilnesfjorden further out, the Dalsfjorden runs 43 km inland. On the way in, the Flekkefjorden branches south to Flekke, the island of Dalsøyna lies off Dale, and the Dalsfjord Bridge, a suspension bridge, spans the fjord. East of Dale the fjord forms the border between Fjaler and Sunnfjord, and its innermost part is less than a kilometre wide.

Boats for this stretch of fjord are listed at Bygstad, on the north shore 2 km from the head of the fjord and just across that border in Sunnfjord, including an 18 ft open console boat for six with a 115 hp outboard, whose owner can also come along as skipper.

At the head of the fjord the river Gaula runs out at Osen, where Norway's oldest salmon ladder was built.
