Florø, Norway's westernmost town
Florø received its town charter in 1860, when the herring fishery made this stretch of outer Sunnfjord busy, and it was planned from the start with a main street, Strandgata, running parallel to the shore. Today it is the administrative centre of Kinn and a Hurtigruten port of call.
A 23 ft pilothouse boat for six is based in town, with a 200 hp engine, bow thruster, outside helm, fish finder and diesel heater. A day cruiser belongs to an owner on Store Oddane, a small island south-west of the centre, who rents only to experienced boaters and offers delivery along the coast.
Out towards the open sea, on the south side of Hellefjorden, the island of Batalden rises like a pyramid to 492 m, although it is only about 2 km across. The old fishing village on its southern shore shares its name.
